Yo-Yo Weather

Woke up to a sunny morning at 8 o'clock, which clouded over by 9 o'clock - only to brighten up by 10 o'clock when I took Bella out for her morning stroll.
It was beautifully bright, although quite a few clouds about.
After yesterday's unremitting grey skies, it was great to see the sun.
These campanula are still blooming out of the pub garden wall.
Took Bella out for an early walk about midday - when it was sunny again, having clouded over about 11 am. I'm not sure why people adorn the front of their windscreens with artificial flowers - I've seen several vehicles like this lately. Is it a Bath thing?
The view over to Solsbury Hill.
After yesterday's rain, this stream was running fast. Bella decided that it was just the water she wanted to drink.
Coming up to 1 pm, the clouds started massing again, this time for a longer stay although no rain yet.
Down at the football pitch, they may be changing to water polo at this rate.
This afternoon, we went down to town to see a film, "Angele et Tony". Unfortunately as the Southgate car park got flooded and the Christmas Fair has started in Bath, we couldn't get parked so Su insisted I went to see the film and she came home and nursed her cold. I think she might not have enjoyed the film very much. I found it a straightforward enough tale, but confusingly presented and quite disjointed. I should have been suspicious when the Bath Film Festival notes used the term "magical realism" to describe it. It not a bad film, but... the rain started as I came out of the film.
Tonight, we are going to try and get parked again (the shoppers should have gone home) to see what promises to be a feelgood film, "Quartet". This will be our last film of the Festival, which finishes later this evening.
This day a year ago, this picture of Su displaying a giant leaf at Westonbirt really caught my eye on the blog post.

Rain and Landslip

After yesterday's clear and bright day, yet again a complete change in the weather. This was the scene on the way out this morning.
Driving home, we went past the river which was very high, with the path alongside it under water.
Took Bella out during a lull in the rain (not for long!). Saw this seating conveniently placed for anyone needing a rest -and OK with insecure furniture!
Went out along from Perfect View (the fields are far too wet for splodging about in) to investigate the recent landslip that featured on the BBC News website. This sign turned out to have been very presciently placed - this is just where the boulder from the wall at the top of the hill rolled down the hill and brought down some trees. I talked to a chap who lives just downhill from where the boulder landed. He told me that he was out in the rain from midnight for a few hours after hearing the noise of the wall's collapse. The people in the house at the top must feel a bit precarious!
This sign rather blows the cover of any covert capture cars in action!
Left over from when the boulder and other debris was being removed the other night.
This is the hill from the top of the slope. We do live in a hilly place.
A splash of colour on a rainy afternoon - petrol leaving an iridescent trail through the leaves.
This day a year ago, I was taken by textures of various sorts, This peeling birch tree caught my eye.

Lull Between the Storms

After the last 24 hours eventful weather, this morning was calm and bright. This amazing cloud formation loomed over Bath at the beginning of the morning.
The skies cleared and we decided that we should take advantage of the break in the weather before the next batch of heavy rain arrives, and went up to Westonbirt for the afternoon. They even have eco-cones to contain the traffic there.
Thankfully, there were no obvious signs of wind damage after yesterday's closure.
One of the estate buildings next to a tree nursery.
There was lots of evidence of much rain, including the newly formed Westonbirt ribbon lake at the bottom of the hill.
Lovely shades of colour in these ferns.
Beech and oak are the main deciduous leaves still hanging on to their trees after yesterday's high winds.
The afternoon light brought out the remaining colour on the trees.
This one tree was picked out by the sun.
Time to head off back to Bath, as the sun descended.
This day a year ago, I dragged Su off to Westonbirt for a walk after which we sat drank tea watching the sun set.

Rain and Impending Rain

Reports of floods all over the West Country after yesterday's rain. Today we woke up to strong winds, with Westonbirt shut as a consequence. The birch tree nearer our house is still managing to hang on to some of its leaves.
Not a morning for rushing out, and so we didn't. Eventually went out to do some necessary shopping, here amongst other places.
Su braved the shops in town while I came home and then took Bella out for her afternoon walk. It's hard to photograph the wind, but there were lots of bins littered about the streets to show the effects.
A handy flag wrapped around its flagpole (and it's still the wrong way up, Richard…)
A lost hat missing its owner.
I've never seen a UK numberplate quite like this before…
Trying to catch a plane flying overhead showed the wind blowing this branch about
The rain had started to come down and the winds have not yet abated. Clouds started piling up - it's going to be a stormy night.
This day a year ago, the clouds had broken and gave us a spell of brightness.

Rain, Pilates, Dentist…

Woke up to the sound of the rain still coming down and looked out of the window to see a river running down our road. Dived out to the van and drove down to Larkhall for my Pilates class before heading off to the dentist through floods to get my detached crown temporarily reattached. I'll need a new one in the New Year after just 26 years! Got home after a lunch rendezvous with Su and acceded to Bella's pleading for a walk.
My timing was excellent as the skies cleared and brightened up, although this meant that the temperature dropped as well.
Physallis flowers leave lovely remains.
The afternoon light on the hillside was glorious.
I kept Bella out of the wet and boggy fields, but she did insist on getting a drink out of this gushing stream.
We went up to Charlcombe churchyard, walking in over a carper of oak leaves.
The light up there was beautiful as well.
I really liked the branch of this conifer tree
This lichen also appealed.
Coming back up the road, saw more clearly the evidence of how much water had flowed down hill in the last day or so. Floods all over this part of the country at least.
The setting sun showed off the clouds over Solsbury Hill nicely.
This day a year ago, it was an overcast day and Bella and I wandered the streets trying to decode the meaning of these strange symbols.
