So, the promised/ threatened storms arrived overnight - and then stopped just after 9 this morning. Along with a Canadian couple (whose names I didn't catch) and Rhonda & David from Melbourne, we got a lift from Erdal in his minivan to the top of the site at Ephesus.
Su was convinced we had found the Stargate, but it turned out not to be a portal... There were loads of people milling about, which Su pointed out seemed appropriate for a city that numbered 250,000 at its peak. The site is truly vast, with great wide avenues of marble and big municipal structures and spaces:- the library of Celsus, the amphitheatre, gymnasium, agora...
Su spotted the sarcophagi collection and looked them over for size. After a couple of hours we emerged at the bottom of the site. There Rhonda & David met us, and (like a scene from "Charade") went to the third shop on the left and asked them to ring for Erdal, who turned up 10 minutes later. Very smooth all round - not what we're used to!
Got a cup of Lavazza coffee in Selcuk and went for a wander, finding a cheese & spinach pastry, a nicely decorated van and more storks' nests. They all left in August, apparently, and come back in March.
Came back to the hotel for a break, when it started to drizzle. So far though I have had no cause to use my rain gear....
We may go and see one or all of St. John's Basilica, the temple of Artemis and/or a 13th Century mosque later on. Hectic stuff, this holidaying!
Fantastic and beautiful, Marcus. A lovely diversion from my Ethical Practice session (three hours!) prep!
